How to get rental car receipts from Hertz, Enterprise, Avis and others

Where Hertz, Enterprise, National, Alamo, Avis and Budget keep receipts for past rentals, what you need to look one up, how long each keeps them online, and why tolls arrive separately.

A rental car receipt is easy to lose. You drop the car at the airport in a hurry, the final receipt isn't ready yet, and the paper rental agreement ends up in the seat pocket on the plane home. The good news is that most major rental companies have an online receipt lookup. The catch is that most keep receipts online for only six months.

Short answer Use the company's Get a Receipt page with your reservation or rental agreement number. Hertz: search by reservation or rental agreement number and last name, or by driver's license (6 months online). Enterprise: Get a Receipt on enterprise.com (6 months). National: Emerald Club members sign in and open My Trips > Past Trips. Alamo: Past Trips/Receipts (2 years). Avis and Budget: the e-Receipt page, or Past Rentals in your profile (Avis: 6 months).

What you need to look up a receipt

Most lookups ask for some combination of:

  • your reservation confirmation number, from the booking email,
  • your rental agreement number, from the paperwork you got at pickup,
  • your last name, spelled as it is on the rental, and
  • sometimes your driver's license details or the country you rented in.

If you're a member of the company's loyalty program and your number was on the rental, signing in is usually easier. Your past rentals are listed and you don't need any numbers.

Hertz

Go to Get a Receipt on hertz.com (it's also in the site footer under Customer Support). You can search two ways:

  • Reservation # or Rental Agreement # plus your last name. The confirmation number is in your reservation email. The rental record number is on your paper rental agreement.
  • Driver's license.

Hertz says receipts can take up to 7 days after you return the car to appear, and they're available online for 6 months from the return date.

Hertz Gold Plus Rewards members can also get eReceipts by email after the rental closes. Hertz describes turning this on in your profile preferences.

In Gmail: from:hertz.com after:2025/01/01 before:2026/01/01.

Enterprise, National and Alamo

These three brands belong to the same company but each has its own receipt lookup.

Enterprise

Use Get a Receipt on enterprise.com. Receipts are online for six months, starting 48 hours after you return the car. If a search doesn't find yours, Enterprise suggests checking:

  • that you picked the right country,
  • that your driver's license number is correct,
  • that your name is spelled correctly, and
  • that the license number and name match what's on your rental contract.

For a rental more than six months ago, contact the branch you rented from and they can send a copy. Enterprise Plus members who had their number on the rental get a copy of the receipt emailed automatically to the address on their profile.

In Gmail: from:enterprise.com after:2025/01/01 before:2026/01/01.

National

National's online receipts are for Emerald Club members:

  1. Sign in to your Emerald Club profile.
  2. Click My Trips.
  3. Under Past Trips, click the rental you need.

Emerald Club members can also sign up for eReceipts, which email a copy of the rental invoice to your profile address when you return the car. National notes that some receipts may not show up online, depending on how the rental was booked, where you rented, or how long ago it was. If you're not an Emerald Club member, National's help center says it can't print receipts online yet, and asks you to call customer service.

In Gmail: from:nationalcar.com after:2025/01/01 before:2026/01/01.

Alamo

Use Past Trips/Receipts on alamo.com. Alamo keeps receipts online for 2 years, starting 48 hours after you return the car. That's the longest window of the companies here.

In Gmail: from:alamo.com after:2025/01/01 before:2026/01/01.

Avis and Budget

Avis and Budget use nearly identical receipt pages.

Avis

Choose Get e-Receipt from the top of avis.com, or sign in and open Past Rentals in your Avis profile. On the e-Receipt page, enter:

  • the country where you rented,
  • your last name, and
  • your confirmation number (11 characters, like 12345678US1) or rental agreement number (9 digits, on the paperwork from pickup).

Then select Get Receipt. The receipt opens as a PDF. Avis says to allow up to 7 days after you return the car, and it keeps receipts online for up to six months. For older receipts, Avis lists 1-800-352-7900.

In Gmail: from:avis.com after:2025/01/01 before:2026/01/01.

Budget

Budget's e-Receipts page works the same way: fill in the fields, starting with the country of rental, or sign in to your Budget profile and open Past Rentals.

In Gmail: from:budget.com after:2025/01/01 before:2026/01/01.

What a rental receipt shows

The final receipt is different from the estimate you saw when you booked. Hertz describes its receipts as itemized: the total, plus extras like additional drivers, protection products and the fuel purchase option, any late-return or refueling charges, and state and local taxes and surcharges. That itemization is why the final receipt, not the booking confirmation, is the one to keep.

Tolls arrive later

Tolls you run up on a rental are often billed after the rental closes, through a toll program, so they may not be on the receipt you get when you return the car. Enterprise, for example, sends you to a separate toll administrator site, where you search by last name and rental agreement number to see the tolls from that rental. If you claim tolls as an expense, look for that second charge on your card and get its statement too.

Booked through Expedia or another site?

If you paid when you booked, the booking site's receipt is your proof of purchase. If you chose pay later and paid at the counter, the rental company's receipt is the one to keep. Expedia's help center describes this split for cars, and notes the rental company can also give you a copy of the contract with the receipt.

Getting a whole year of rentals

  1. Search your email for every rental company at once: from:(hertz.com OR enterprise.com OR nationalcar.com OR alamo.com OR avis.com OR budget.com) after:2025/01/01 before:2026/01/01. More Gmail searches for receipts.
  2. Pull the rest from each lookup soon. Six months goes by fast. If you rent often for work, grab receipts quarterly.
  3. Sign up for emailed receipts where the company offers them (Hertz Gold Plus Rewards, Enterprise Plus, National Emerald Club). Then next year's receipts are already in your inbox.

Business rental tips

  • Put your loyalty number on every rental. It's what makes signed-in receipt history and automatic email receipts work.
  • If your company has a corporate account, book with its account number so the rental is tracked, but still keep the receipt yourself.
  • Note the purpose of the trip when you file the receipt.
  • Keep the toll statement with the rental receipt so the two charges stay together.

Doing it with What Receipt?

Rental receipts that arrive by email come in automatically when you connect Gmail on What Receipt? Pro, and Import a past year catches up on a whole tax year. On the free plan, forward them to your personal forwarding address in Settings, or download the PDF and add it. Snap the paper agreement at the counter if that's all you have. Each receipt is read for vendor, date, total and tax. Tag the rental, the flight and the hotel with the same project so a trip's costs end up together.

Questions

How do I get a receipt for a rental car I already returned?

Use the company's online lookup with your confirmation or rental agreement number and your last name: Get a Receipt at Hertz and Enterprise, e-Receipt at Avis and Budget, Past Trips/Receipts at Alamo, or My Trips for National Emerald Club members. Allow a few days after the return for it to appear.

How far back can I get rental car receipts?

Hertz, Enterprise and Avis keep receipts online for about six months. Alamo keeps them for two years. For anything older, contact the company or the location you rented from.

Why isn't my rental receipt showing up yet?

Receipts aren't always ready right away. Hertz and Avis both say to allow up to 7 days after you return the car, and Enterprise and Alamo start their windows 48 hours after the return.

Why is there a second rental car charge on my card?

Often it's tolls. Toll programs usually bill after the rental closes, separately from the rental receipt. Check the rental company's toll help page for a statement.
