What Receipt? vs Foreceipt: an honest comparison

How What Receipt? and Foreceipt compare on price, receipt limits, email import, tax categories and accounting sync, including where Foreceipt is the better pick.

Foreceipt is a receipt app with a free plan, a web portal and apps for iPhone and Android. It scans receipts, takes forwarded email receipts, and comes with expense categories set up for US and Canadian tax filing. If you're weighing it against What Receipt?, the real differences come down to what unlimited receipts cost, how email receipts get in, and whether you need QuickBooks sync, income tracking or bank imports. Where What Receipt? is the better fit

You have more than 200 receipts a month, or don't want to count

Foreceipt's Individual plan covers 200 receipts a month. That's plenty for many people, but if you're near the line, unlimited on Foreceipt means the Business plan at $12 to $15 a month. What Receipt? Pro is unlimited at $6.99 a month or $59 a year, so you never have to watch a counter.

Your receipts are already in Gmail

Foreceipt takes email receipts when you forward them to your personal Foreceipt address. What Receipt? Pro connects to Gmail and imports receipts on its own: the ones already in your inbox, including the last 90 days, and new ones within minutes. Import a past year catches up a whole tax year in one go. For other mailboxes, What Receipt? has a forwarding address too. If you've never gathered your emailed receipts, here's how to find them in Gmail.

Your spending is mixed

Most people's receipts don't sort neatly. There's a business card, a personal card that sometimes buys business things, a client you bill expenses back to. What Receipt? lets you tag every receipt with a project, such as a client, a side business or Personal, and its Excel workbook has monthly totals by category and by project. Your accountant gets only the business part.

You want missing renewals flagged

Foreceipt can create recurring entries on a schedule you set. What Receipt? works the other way around: it spots recurring charges in the receipts you already have and tells you when one didn't show up this month. That's how a renewal sent to an old email address gets caught before tax time.

You'd rather nothing left your computer

The Mac Privacy Edition is a one-time $29 purchase that reads, files and exports receipts entirely on your Mac. There's no account, no cloud copy and no subscription. Foreceipt doesn't offer anything like it.

Where Foreceipt is the better fit

We'd rather you pick the right tool than the wrong one:

  • You want to pay less month to month and stay under 200 receipts. Foreceipt Individual is $6.25 month to month on the web, or about $5 a month billed yearly. If 200 receipts a month is enough, that's a little cheaper than What Receipt? Pro.
  • Your free allowance matters most. Foreceipt's free plan allows up to 100 receipts, against 30 a month on What Receipt? Free. Note that Foreceipt's free plan keeps receipts for 12 months, and tax records often need to be kept longer (see how long to keep receipts).
  • You need QuickBooks Online sync. Foreceipt's Business plan pushes receipts straight into QuickBooks Online. What Receipt? exports files that QuickBooks Online imports (here's how), but you do the import step.
  • You file in Canada, or want IRS categories out of the box. Foreceipt ships with expense categories defined for both IRS and CRA filing.
  • You track income. Foreceipt records income as well as expenses. What Receipt? tracks receipts, and reads statements only to find charges with no receipt.
  • You want a native app in the App Store or Google Play today. What Receipt? runs in the browser on your phone for now.
  • Two people share the books. Every Foreceipt plan includes two team members. What Receipt? is one person per account.

Switching from Foreceipt

  1. In Foreceipt, generate an Excel report of your receipts, and request a ZIP of the original images from the web portal. Foreceipt's help pages walk through both.
  2. Start a free What Receipt? account and drop the original files in. They're read again automatically, so vendors, dates and totals come back without retyping.
  3. Connect Gmail (Pro) and use Import a past year to pull in emailed receipts, or set up your forwarding address and point your mail rules at it.
  4. Keep your Foreceipt report somewhere safe. It's your record of what was already filed.
