How to find Target receipts for expenses and taxes

Where Target keeps receipts and invoices for Target.com orders and in-store purchases, how to make store purchases show up in your account, how far back they go, and how to round up a year.

Target keeps a digital copy of most purchases, but only if it can tie the purchase to your account. Online orders always are. Store purchases depend on how you paid. Here's where to find both, how far back they go, and what to do about the ones Target can't see.

Short answer Target.com orders: open your Target account, go to your orders (called Purchase History or Orders depending on the page), choose View order, then Receipts and invoices. From there you can print a receipt or view a detailed invoice. In-store purchases appear in the same place under the In-store toggle if you scanned your Wallet in the Target app, swiped a card saved to your account or entered your Target Circle phone number. Online orders are kept for about two years, in-store purchases for about one year.

Target.com orders

Finding the receipt or invoice

  • On Target.com: open your Target account and go to Purchase History. Find the order and choose View order, then Receipts and invoices. You can Print receipts, Print gift receipt or View detailed invoices.
  • In the Target app: open the account tab, select Purchase history, pick the order, then select Receipts and View.

Orders show up within a few hours and stay available for about two years.

Target's help pages call the list of orders Purchase History in some articles and Orders in others, and the app uses Purchases in places. Expect the labels to vary a little between the website, the app and app versions.

The emails

Target emails you when an order ships, and that shipping confirmation includes a return barcode. Target doesn't put packing slips in boxes, so the order page in your account is the full record. Use the detailed invoice from Receipts and invoices rather than the email.

In-store purchases

How store purchases get into your account

A store purchase shows up in your Target.com account and the Target app when you:

  • scan your Wallet barcode in the Target app at the register, either for Target Circle offers or to pay with a linked payment method
  • swipe a card that's saved to your Target.com account
  • enter the phone number linked to your Target Circle account

They appear within a few hours and stay for about one year.

Purchases paid with cash, a check or a Target GiftCard that isn't linked to your Wallet don't show up unless you also scanned your Wallet. If store purchases aren't appearing at all, Target suggests adding the payment card you use to your account.

Finding an in-store purchase

  • In the Target app: open the account tab, go to your purchases and switch the toggle to In-store. Pick the purchase.
  • On Target.com: go to Orders, switch to the In-store view under the heading and select View orders.

Target's help describes this view mainly for returns: you can show the return barcode at Guest Services, Print return barcode or Print gift receipt. A gift receipt leaves out prices, so it's no use as an expense record. For expenses, keep the paper receipt or photograph it, and use the in-store view to confirm the date and items.

No receipt and not in your account?

For returns, Target stores can try to look up a purchase if you bring the payment card you used: a Target Circle Card or a Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover card. That helps with a return. It's not a way to get a receipt copy for your records, so don't count on it for expenses.

What a Target receipt shows

A Target.com detailed invoice shows the order's items, charges and any sales tax. A store receipt is the register receipt: what you bought, the tax, the total and how you paid.

Getting a whole year of Target receipts

There's no bulk export. Your options:

  1. Open each order in your account and save the invoice or receipt as a PDF. Online orders go back about two years. In-store purchases go back about one year, so don't leave last year's store receipts until the following spring.
  2. Search your email for Target.com orders. In Gmail, from:target.com after:2025/01/01 before:2026/01/01 covers a calendar year. More Gmail searches for receipts. Store purchases don't reach your inbox, so this only covers online orders.
  3. Use your card statement as a checklist for any trips you're missing.

Buying for a business at Target

Two things help when you buy for work:

  • Use one card for business purchases and save it to your Target.com account. Every swipe then lands in your purchase history on its own.
  • Tax-exempt organizations such as government bodies and nonprofits can apply for a tax-exempt Target.com account. Target says that account can't be used for personal purchases, and it doesn't accept resale certificates. Once an exempt order ships, the invoice shows the charges and any sales tax.

Keeping Target receipts tax-ready

  • Scan your Wallet at every checkout. It's what makes store purchases retrievable later.
  • Split business and personal baskets into two transactions.
  • Save store receipts within the year. Target's in-store history only goes back about a year.
  • Note what it was for. "Supplies for the March workshop" says more than a total.

Doing it with What Receipt?

Photograph Target store receipts with What Receipt? as you get them. The camera takes several shots in a row, so a week's worth goes quickly. Drop in invoice PDFs saved from your Target account, too. Each one is read for vendor, date, total, tax and payment method and filed under a category. Tag business purchases to a project so they stay apart from personal ones. Target.com emails can come in automatically: Pro connects to Gmail, and the free plan gives you a forwarding address for any mailbox.
